Winchester Varmint HV 17 HMR ammunition pairs a 17-grain Hornady V-Max bullet with rimfire-primed brass to deliver 2550 fps muzzle velocity and 245 ft-lbs of energy. The Winchester Varmint HV line targets pest control and predator hunting scenarios where flat trajectory and explosive terminal performance matter more than deep penetration. The 17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire cartridge sits between .22 WMR and centerfire .17 calibers, offering bolt-action and semi-auto rifle compatibility with minimal recoil and supersonic flight past 100 yards.
Built for the Box
Each round features a Hornady V-Max projectile — a polymer-tipped hollow-point design that raises ballistic coefficient while acting as a wedge to initiate expansion on contact. The flat base stabilizes in-flight, reducing yaw and maintaining accuracy across prairie wind. Winchester loads these rounds in the United States using non-corrosive rimfire primers and clean-burning propellant. Expect consistent ignition in bolt rifles and semi-auto platforms chambered for 17 HMR.
