The Winchester Super X 38 Special 148 grain wadcutter is a dedicated target load, engineered to cut clean, full-diameter holes in paper for unambiguous scoring in bullseye and PPC competition. Wadcutter ammunition uses a flat-nosed, cylindrical lead projectile that shears paper fibers rather than tearing them, eliminating the ragged-edge disputes common to roundnose or hollowpoint holes. At 710 feet per second and 166 foot-pounds of energy, this load sits in the mild-recoil window preferred by precision shooters—fast enough for consistent ignition and trajectory, soft enough to hold the sights on target through long strings of fire.
Performance at a Glance
Winchester chambers this load in new-production brass with non-corrosive Boxer primers, making the cases fully reloadable for shooters who cast their own wadcutters or buy bulk lead projectiles. The 148 grain weight matches the classic bullseye target prescription: enough sectional density to punch clean at 25 yards, light enough that a four-inch revolver can cycle through fifty rounds without fatigue. Muzzle velocity of 710 fps keeps the bullet subsonic out of snub-nose barrels, reducing noise signature at indoor ranges where acoustic compliance matters.
