The Winchester Power-Point 8x57mm JS Mauser loads a 170-grain jacketed soft point to 2360 feet per second and 2102 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. This is classic hunting ammunition for the 8mm Mauser chambering — used in surplus military bolt rifles converted for sporting use and modern hunting rifles chambered in 8x57mm JS. The .323-inch diameter projectile features Winchester’s time-proven Power-Point design: a notched jacket that initiates expansion on impact while the tapered jacket controls petal formation for weight retention and straight-line penetration. You get reliable upset at typical hunting distances without the fragmentation that sacrifices exit wounds.
Built for the Box
Winchester manufactures this load at U.S. facilities using new brass cases with boxer primers. The 170-grain bullet carries a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.205 — adequate for woods and moderate-range shots where the 8mm Mauser excels. Velocity stays supersonic well past 300 yards, and the soft point design expands reliably at impact velocities above 1800 fps. Hunters running Mauser 98 actions, Yugoslav M48s, or modern sporting rifles in 8x57mm JS find the Power-Point a dependable choice for whitetail, mule deer, black bear, and feral hogs.
