Underwood’s 45 Colt 225 grain lead hollow point pushes 1050 feet per second from a revolver barrel, delivering 551 foot-pounds at the muzzle. This is a dedicated hunting load — built for medium game where terminal expansion matters more than deep penetration through barriers. The 45 Colt (Long Colt) cartridge originated in 1872 for the Colt Single Action Army and remains popular in lever-action rifles and large-frame revolvers. Underwood manufactures this ammunition in the United States using non-corrosive Boxer-primed brass cases.
Built for the Box
The 225 grain projectile uses a lead hollow point design — soft enough to mushroom on tissue, hard enough to resist excessive leading in standard revolver forcing cones and barrels. Underwood applies a wax-based lubricant to the bullet during casting; this lubricant vaporizes at launch and produces visible smoke, especially at higher chamber pressures. The trade-off is intentional: lower-smoke formulations would sacrifice velocity and energy. Brass cases receive nickel plating to resist tarnish during storage and improve feeding reliability in lever guns. Flash-suppressed powder reduces muzzle signature in low light. Each box contains 20 loaded rounds; cases are reloadable.

This load fits single-action revolvers like the Ruger Blackhawk, Vaquero, and Colt SAA clones, as well as lever-action rifles chambered in 45 Colt. Verify chamber dimensions before use — some older revolvers were built to lower pressure specs. Browse our full inventory of 45 long colt ammo for additional grain weights and bullet styles.
