Underwood 44 Special ammunition chambered in 44 Special delivers 190 grain semi-wadcutter bullets at 1150 feet per second, producing 558 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. The round is built for range and target work where clean-cutting paper is the objective and lead fouling is not. Underwood applies a Black Cherry polymer coating to the projectile — a thermally stable compound that prevents lead-to-bore contact and eliminates the gas cutting and fouling common to uncoated cast bullets at higher chamber pressures. The coating withstands high heat, resists abrasion, and provides self-lubrication without the plastic burning smell associated with older polymer systems.
Load Profile
The 190 grain semi-wadcutter is soft enough to expand on impact against tissue but hard enough to resist deformation during feeding and firing. The wadcutter profile cuts clean holes in paper targets, simplifying scoring in bullseye and silhouette disciplines. Underwood loads these rounds in nickel-plated brass cases — improved feeding, enhanced corrosion resistance, and no tarnish during storage or contact with leather, moisture, or dissimilar metals. Flash-suppressed powder maintains night vision if you fire in low light. Boxer primers allow for straightforward reloading once the case is spent.
