The Underwood 40 S&W 180-grain Full Metal Jacket is a flat-nose defense load built for barrier penetration and woods carry. Underwood 40 S&W 180gr FMJ launches a non-expanding projectile at 1100 feet per second, delivering 484 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. The flat-nose profile maintains nose-forward orientation through heavy clothing, intermediate barriers, and dense tissue — where round-nose bullets can tumble. Nickel plated cases resist corrosion in humid holsters and leather mag pouches, feed reliably in all semi-automatic actions, and clean up faster during resizing. Flash-suppressed powder protects your night vision if you engage a threat after dark. Each round is loaded in boxer-primed, reloadable brass and assembled in the United States.

Built for the Box

Underwood loads this 180-grain FMJ to full-power specifications, using new nickel plated brass treated with the Ducta-Bright 7a process. That electroplating method eliminates the embrittlement seen in older nickel formulations — cases retain the same reload life as raw brass, withstand high chamber pressures in +P pistol platforms, and resist stress cracks at the case mouth during deep draws. The boxer primer ignites flash-suppressed powder that burns clean and fast, reducing muzzle signature in low light. The 180-grain flat-nose bullet seats to an overall length that cycles in Glock 22/23, Springfield XD, Sig P229, and Smith & Wesson M&P pistols. Underwood field-tests each lot in customer-representative firearms before shipping.

The flat-nose bullet design shines in outdoor carry scenarios where you may confront large predators or aggressive game — the non-expanding profile drives deep, and the flat meplat crushes a wider wound channel than round-nose FMJ. Browse more duty and defense options in our 40 cal ammo catalog.
