The Trijicon RMR HRS Type 2 is a slide-mounted reflex sight engineered for handgun applications where durability under recoil is non-negotiable. After rigorous evaluation, U.S. Special Operations Command awarded Trijicon the Handgun Reflex Sight (HRS) contract based on this optic’s ability to survive repeated slide impacts, maintain zero under harsh conditions, and deliver fast target acquisition in close to intermediate engagements. The commercial HRS variant mirrors the USSOCOM configuration — a 3.25 MOA adjustable LED dot housed in a coyote brown hard-anodized body, serialized and date-stamped for traceability. Trijicon built the Type 2 around a patented housing shape that channels impact forces away from the lens, reducing the risk of cracked glass during drops or hard recoil cycles.

Behind the Glass

The RMR Type 2 uses upgraded electronics designed specifically for the violent reciprocating mass of a pistol slide. Manual brightness control via side-mounted buttons gives you eight daylight settings and two night-vision-compatible settings. Toggle between manual and automatic modes — in automatic, an ambient light sensor adjusts dot brightness to match conditions. Manual mode holds your selected brightness for 16.5 hours after the last button press, then reverts to automatic to ensure the optic is ready when you need it. Button lockout prevents accidental mode changes during holstering or carry. The 3.25 MOA dot offers the best balance of precision and speed — small enough for 25-yard headshots, large enough to pick up instantly at arm’s length. Trijicon machines the housing from 7075-T6 aluminum, then applies a hard-anodized coyote brown Type III finish to reduce glare and resist corrosion in humid or saltwater environments.

The RMR Type 2 shares the same footprint and physical dimensions as the original RMR Type 1, so any pistol slide milled for the RMR pattern accepts this optic without modification. If you’re mounting to a factory optics-ready slide on a Glock MOS, Springfield OSP, Walther PDP, or H&K VP9 OR, you’ll need Trijicon’s AC32064 mounting kit to bridge the adapter plate gap and secure the optic properly. The patented housing geometry uses chamfered edges and radiused corners to deflect impact energy during drops or hard strikes, protecting the lens from the corner cracks that plague flat-bodied reflex sights. Who It’s For

Law enforcement officers running duty sidearms benefit from the RMR HRS Type 2’s proven durability under daily carry and qualification schedules. Concealed carriers who’ve upgraded to an optics-ready pistol get a sight that survives holster draws, sweat, and the occasional fumble without losing zero. Competitive shooters in USPSA Carry Optics or Steel Challenge appreciate the 3.25 MOA dot’s balance between speed and precision at 7 to 25 yards. Military and contract personnel issued USSOCOM-standard handguns will find the commercial HRS variant identical in performance to the issued optic. Hunters running handguns for close brush work or backup guns gain fast target acquisition in low light without the bulk of a magnified optic.

Care & Maintenance

Inspect the lens for dust or debris before each range session — a microfiber cloth removes smudges without scratching the glass. Check mounting screws for tightness every 500 rounds, applying a drop of blue Loctite if you notice any loosening. The CR2032 battery lasts approximately four years in automatic mode under normal use — swap it annually if you rely on this optic for duty or self-defense. Store the RMR powered off when not in use to extend battery life, though the optic will default to automatic mode after 16.5 hours of inactivity if you forget to manually power down. Avoid submerging the optic in solvents or ultrasonic cleaners — wipe the housing with a damp cloth, then dry thoroughly. The hard-anodized finish resists most environmental damage, but prolonged exposure to saltwater or acidic sweat will eventually cause pitting if not wiped clean after each outing.

Safe Handling & Compliance

Red dot sights do not eliminate the need for proper sight alignment, trigger discipline, or muzzle awareness. An illuminated dot shows where the bore is pointed at a given distance, but environmental factors, ammunition performance, and shooter fundamentals still govern where the bullet impacts. Verify your optic’s zero at the distances you intend to engage, and confirm zero retention after any hard impacts or environmental extremes.

  • Follow the four universal firearms safety rules — treat every firearm as loaded, never point at anything you are not willing to destroy, keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire, and know your target and what lies beyond it.
  • State and local laws govern the carrying and use of firearms equipped with optics; some jurisdictions restrict optics or require specific configurations for duty or concealed carry — verify current regulations in your area before deploying this sight in any carry role.
  • Co-witness iron sights with your RMR whenever possible to maintain a backup aiming solution if the optic loses power or sustains damage during use.
