Hornady’s Critical Defense line addresses a recurring defensive-ammo problem: hollow points that clog with fabric and fail to expand when fired from the short barrels typical of carry pistols. The Hornady Critical Defense 45 ACP loads a 185-grain FTX polymer-tipped bullet at 1,000 fps and 411 ft-lb — designed specifically for concealed carry in 45 ACP platforms where barrel length rarely exceeds four inches. The FTX insert fills the hollow-point cavity, preventing clogging through denim, leather, or heavy winter clothing, and initiates expansion at velocities below what traditional jacketed hollow points require.
Performance Profile
Hornady chose 185 grains instead of the military-standard 230-grain ball weight to increase velocity and reduce felt recoil from compact frames. At 1,000 fps, the lighter FTX achieves flatter trajectory inside typical defensive distances (3-21 feet) and cycles reliably in subcompact 45 ACP pistols where heavier rounds can induce slide-speed issues. Low-flash propellants preserve night vision in low-light defensive encounters. The polymer tip ensures smooth feeding through semi-automatic actions — no sharp-edge cavity to catch on feed ramps. Factory-new, non-corrosive, boxer-primed brass cases are reloadable. Manufactured in the United States.

Safe Handling & Compliance
Federal law requires purchasers to be at least 18 years old for rifle and shotgun ammunition, and at least 21 for handgun ammunition.
