The Geissele S3G trigger occupies a unique space in the AR15 trigger landscape. Where most triggers force you to choose between single-stage speed or two-stage precision, the S3G delivers both through a hybrid rolling break that compresses takeup and break into one fluid motion. Designed explicitly for 3 Gun competition — where targets appear at 5 yards one second and 300 the next — this trigger reduces reset travel to the absolute minimum while preserving the tactile feedback competitive shooters rely on to manage cadence under match pressure. Geissele machines every component in-house from tool steel, then vapor-hones contact surfaces to eliminate grit and stack. You get two hammer springs in the kit: install the lighter spring for a 3-4 lb pull on speed stages, swap to the heavier spring when running major-power factor loads or when match rules demand higher pull weights. The S3G fits any mil-spec AR15 or AR10 lower receiver using standard .154-inch trigger and hammer pins.
The Mechanism
Geissele built the S3G around a radiused hammer hook geometry that rolls over the sear rather than stacking against a sharp corner. As you press the trigger shoe, slack disappears almost immediately — there is no distinct first stage in the traditional sense. Instead, resistance builds smoothly until the sear releases at the configured pull weight. The hammer spring you install determines that breakpoint: 3-4 lbs with the gold spring, 4.5-5.5 lbs with the black spring. Reset occurs the instant the hammer reengages the sear, traveling roughly 0.040 inches — short enough that your finger never leaves the trigger shoe between shots. This architecture eliminates the hesitation that plagues traditional two-stage triggers in rapid strings while preserving enough tactile feedback to prevent accidental doubles. Geissele vapor-hones the hammer and trigger contact surfaces to a uniform matte finish, removing machining marks without polishing surfaces so smooth they introduce friction variability. Every S3G ships with a jig-ground trigger shoe, hardened disconnector, and plunger-style hammer spring retention system that captures the legs without requiring roll pins.

The S3G installs into any AR15 or AR10 lower receiver machined to mil-spec dimensions using standard .154-inch trigger and hammer pins. Geissele does not recommend this trigger for use in Sig MPX/MCX platforms or pistol-caliber carbine AR15 variants — those systems require the Super MCX SSA or Super MPX SSA triggers due to different bolt weights and recoil impulses. Installing the S3G in a non-compatible platform voids the warranty. For more Geissele components engineered to the same tolerances, browse our Geissele trigger collection.
Where It Shines
The S3G was developed for competitive 3 Gun stages where engagement distances compress and target transitions happen inside fractions of a second. On close-course arrays — hosing a rack of falling steel at 7 yards, splitting an A-zone and a no-shoot at 15, then pivoting to a paper array at 50 — the S3G’s rolling break and near-instantaneous reset let you ride the trigger through the entire string without conscious thought about reset timing. Install the 3-4 lb spring when shooting minor-power factor ammunition (typically 55-62 grain .223 loads at 3Gun velocities); the lighter pull reduces finger fatigue over 200-round match days and shortens split times on multi-target arrays. Switch to the 4.5-5.5 lb spring when running major-power factor .308 loads in an AR10 or when match rules specify minimum pull weights. The heavier spring also provides a margin of safety for newer shooters still developing trigger discipline. Because the S3G eliminates traditional first-stage slack, it is not ideal for precision rifle stages where you want a distinct wall to prep against before breaking the shot — for those applications, Geissele’s SSA-E or Hi-Speed National Match triggers offer better control. The S3G excels when speed trumps sub-MOA precision.
Safe Handling & Compliance
Per current ATF guidance, the S3G is classified as a semi-automatic trigger assembly — each round fired requires a discrete trigger function, and the device does not convert a firearm to automatic fire. Regulatory status has changed before and may change again; verify current federal and state law before ordering.
- Four rules: Treat every firearm as loaded, never point at anything you are unwilling to destroy, finger off trigger until sights are on target, know your target and what lies beyond. Review NSSF firearm safety rules.
- State restrictions: Some states prohibit triggers below specified pull weights or restrict modifications to fire-control groups. Connecticut, New Jersey, and California maintain evolving lists of approved components — verify current law in your jurisdiction before installation.
- Installation: Always confirm the firearm is unloaded before disassembling the lower receiver. After installing the S3G, function-check the rifle with an empty chamber: pull the trigger, hold it to the rear, manually cycle the bolt, then release the trigger slowly until you feel/hear the reset click. Do not release the hammer using the trigger until you have verified proper sear engagement and disconnector function.
