For big game hunters running smoothbore shotguns, the Federal Premium Vital-Shok 20 gauge rifled slug brings accuracy and energy beyond traditional Foster-style projectiles. This 2-3/4″ shell launches a 3/4-ounce hollow point slug at 1600 feet per second, generating 1864 foot-pounds of muzzle energy — enough for whitetail, hogs, and black bear at ethical distances. Federal Premium engineers this load with the proprietary TruBall system: a plastic ball seated between the wad and slug that stabilizes flight and centers the projectile in the bore, delivering extreme accuracy from unrifled barrels without requiring a rifled choke.

The hollow point nose aids expansion on impact while maintaining weight retention for deep penetration through vitals. Unlike sabot slugs that require rifled barrels, this design runs reliably in smoothbore cylinders, improved cylinders, and rifled choke tubes — flexibility that matters when you’re hunting with a multi-purpose field gun.
