Complete Adams Arms Piston Uppers: Adams Arms Piston Upper Receivers

$499.99

Chambered in 5.56 NATO, the Adams Arms piston upper receiver replaces direct impingement with a self-regulating gas piston system—venting combustion gases forward instead of into the carrier. You get cleaner operation, reduced carbon in the receiver, and extended bolt life over standard DI uppers. Configured for mid-length gas at 16″ or carbine at 11.5″, each upper ships with forged flat-top rail, barrel, gas block, piston assembly, and bolt carrier group—drop it onto your lower and confirm headspace.

The Adams Arms piston upper receiver moves the AR-15 platform from direct impingement to short-stroke gas piston operation. Instead of routing hot combustion gases through a tube into the carrier, the piston system taps gas at the block, drives a short piston rod rearward to cycle the bolt, then vents excess pressure forward through the hand guard. That shift keeps carbon, moisture, and heat out of the upper receiver—metal stays cleaner, lubrication lasts longer, and bolt life extends by thousands of rounds. Adams Arms machines these uppers from 7075-T6 forged aluminum, pairs them with chrome-lined 4150 steel barrels, and installs a proprietary adjustable gas block that lets you tune cycling speed to match suppressor back-pressure, over-gassed factory loads, or undergassed hand loads.

Platform Overview

Adams Arms uppers ship in two primary gas-system lengths: mid-length at 16″ barrel and carbine at 11.5″. The mid-length configuration places the gas port 9.5″ from the chamber, softening recoil impulse and extending dwell time; the 11.5″ carbine moves the port to 7″ for faster cycling in short-barreled builds. Both variants include a flat-top Picatinny rail machined into the receiver, a low-profile adjustable gas block, and a complete bolt carrier group with piston-specific carrier tail. The hand guard mounts via standard delta ring or free-float barrel nut, depending on SKU. Each upper arrives fully assembled except for the charging handle and your choice of muzzle device—thread the barrel at 1/2×28 TPI for standard 5.56 brakes, flash hiders, or suppressors. Pair this upper with any mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver; confirm headspace with a .223 Wylde or 5.56 NATO field gauge before live fire.

Adams Arms engineers the piston assembly to self-regulate gas flow—turn the adjustment screw clockwise to reduce gas for suppressed fire, counterclockwise to increase gas for adverse conditions or weak ammunition. You will find complete piston uppers offered in both 16″ mid-length and 11.5″ carbine configurations across our AR-15 upper inventory.

Matching It to Your Build

The 16″ mid-length upper suits general-purpose carbines, 3-gun competition, and hunting applications where you want softer recoil and longer sight radius. The 11.5″ carbine fits pistol builds, truck guns, and suppressed SBRs where compactness outweighs the harsher gas impulse. Both benefit from the piston system’s reduced fouling: expect 2,000–3,000 rounds between deep cleans versus 800–1,200 on direct-impingement uppers under identical conditions. If you shoot suppressed, the adjustable gas block prevents over-gassing that batters extractors and ejectors; dial it down until brass ejects at 3 o’clock and locks back on empty magazines. Builders running undersized gas ports or hand loads below SAAMI-minimum pressure can open the valve to ensure reliable cycling.

At the Range

Before heading to the range, confirm headspace with a no-go gauge—Adams Arms ships these uppers with in-spec bolt gaps, but mixing carriers and bolts from different manufacturers can shift tolerances. Install your charging handle, confirm the gas block adjustment screw is centered (12 clicks from fully closed), and load one round. Fire, observe ejection pattern, and adjust the gas screw as needed. For suppressed fire, close the valve two full turns from your unsuppressed setting, then open one click at a time until the bolt locks back reliably. Clean the piston cup and carrier tail every 500 rounds with a nylon brush and CLP; carbon buildup on the piston face will cause short-stroking if left unchecked.

Safe Handling & Compliance

All firearms sold by Tatted Tacticals require transfer through a licensed Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL07) dealer. We ship to your designated FFL, where you complete ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check before taking possession. Some states require additional state-level background checks, permits, or waiting periods — verify current requirements in your jurisdiction before ordering.

  • Treat every firearm as loaded. Muzzle stays pointed in a safe direction, finger off the trigger until sights are on target and you have decided to fire.
  • Confirm your state and local laws permit ownership of AR-15 upper receivers and short-barreled configurations before ordering. Attaching an upper with barrel length under 16″ to a rifle lower without an approved ATF Form 1 creates an unregistered short-barreled rifle (SBR), a felony under the National Firearms Act.
  • Verify headspace with a .223 Wylde or 5.56 NATO field gauge before firing any new upper/lower combination. An out-of-spec chamber can cause case-head separations and catastrophic failure.
