The CMMG 22LR AR Conversion Kit (Bravo series, model 22BA62F) transforms your 5.56/.223 chambered AR-15 or M16 into a rimfire trainer without tools or permanent modification. Pull your existing bolt carrier group, drop in this stainless steel assembly, load the included 10-round magazine, and you’re running 22LR through the same lower receiver you train with in centerfire. Barrel, gas system, and furniture stay in place — only the BCG changes.

How It Works

CMMG machines the Bravo kit entirely from stainless steel. The bolt face is sized for 22LR cartridge dimensions; the carrier body houses a blowback spring and guide rod that cycle the action using chamber pressure alone — no gas impingement required. When you insert the kit into your upper receiver, the carrier interfaces with your existing buffer and recoil spring. Spent cases eject through the same ejection port; fresh rounds feed from a proprietary 10-round magazine that inserts into your AR’s magazine well and engages the bolt catch.

CMMG recommends round-profile hammers for reliable ignition. Notched or skeletonized hammers can cause light strikes. The kit functions best with 36-grain copper-plated round-nose bullets — high-velocity hollow points and subsonic loads may cause short-stroking or failure to eject. Verify your lower’s hammer geometry before ordering, and stock the kit with the recommended ammo profile for first outings.

The kit weighs 16 ounces — slightly lighter than a mil-spec 5.56 bolt carrier group. After installation, expect a noticeable reduction in felt recoil and muzzle report. This kit works in most AR-15 and M16 lowers and uppers; verify compatibility with piston-driven or non-standard upper receivers before ordering. Browse complete bolt carrier group options for both rimfire conversions and centerfire replacements.

Best Use Cases

New shooters learning trigger control and sight picture benefit from reduced recoil and ammunition cost. Competitive rimfire Steel Challenge or Sportsman divisions allow AR platforms chambered in 22LR. High-volume training drills — malfunction clearance, mag changes, transition exercises — become economically sustainable when you’re burning 22LR instead of 5.56. The kit also suits suppressor hosts: a 22LR can fired through a 5.56 suppressor produces minimal back-pressure and keeps baffles cleaner than centerfire gas blowback.

Installation Notes

Clear and verify the rifle. Remove the upper from the lower. Pull the charging handle and existing bolt carrier group. Slide the CMMG conversion kit into the upper receiver, ensuring the carrier key engages the charging handle. Reattach the upper to the lower. Insert the 10-round magazine and rack the charging handle to chamber a round. The safety selector and trigger function identically to centerfire operation.

After each range session, disassemble the conversion kit and wipe carbon fouling from the bolt face, extractor, and firing pin channel. Rimfire ammunition leaves more residue than centerfire loads. A nylon brush and aerosol bore cleaner handle most deposits. Inspect the extractor claw for wear every 500 rounds; replace if the claw no longer grips case rims firmly. Store the kit dry, and apply a thin coat of oil to the bolt and carrier rails before reassembly.

Safe Handling & Compliance

This conversion kit does not alter your firearm’s legal classification. Your AR-15 remains a semi-automatic rifle — each trigger pull fires one round. Installing the kit does not require serialization, registration, or notification to ATF beyond the original rifle transfer. Some states restrict magazine capacity; verify that 10-round magazines comply with local law before ordering.

  • Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Visually and physically inspect the chamber before installation or removal of the conversion kit.
  • Never rely on a mechanical safety alone. Keep your finger off the trigger until sights are on target and you have decided to fire.
  • Verify that your local range permits rimfire ammunition. Some indoor facilities restrict 22LR due to ricochet or backstop concerns. Outdoor ranges typically allow 22LR without restriction.
