For deer hunters running smoothbore shotguns, the Brenneke K.O. 12 gauge rifled slug brings 1oz of lead to bear at 1650 fps and 2491 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. A rifled slug is a single projectile designed to stabilize through smoothbore barrels by external rifling — grooves cut into the slug body that engage the bore as it travels downrange. Brenneke manufactures this load in Germany under strict quality control, ensuring dimensional consistency and reliable expansion.
Load Profile
The K.O. slug uses a 1oz lead projectile with a polymer sabot designed for smoothbore barrels. In controlled testing, the slug expands to .9″ on impact and produces 5-shot groups measuring under 1.5″ at 50 yards — sufficient accuracy for vitals on whitetail, mule deer, or hog at woods distances. Muzzle velocity of 1650 fps drops to approximately 1320 fps at 100 yards (manufacturer data), maintaining over 1500 ft-lbs at that range. The 2-3/4″ shell length chambers in all 12 gauge shotguns rated for 2-3/4″ or longer shells. Brenneke recommends cylinder bore or improved cylinder chokes; chokes tighter than modified may damage the slug or barrel. The Boxer primer and brass base make this round reloadable for handloaders who cast their own slugs or reuse Brenneke hulls.
